Decluttering 101: 6 easy places to start decluttering

I recently shared some tips to avoid bringing home more clutter than you already have - you can read the post here

But what about the clutter you already have at home?

Below you will find a suggestion of six easy and quick decluttering projects that will help you get started!

Medicine Cabinet

The medicine cabinet is probably the easiest place to start decluttering: you just go through what is there, discard everything that is no longer needed or past the use-by date, and organise the rest. It can't get any easier than this.

Junk Drawer

We all have one (or several), right? By definition a junk drawer is where you store stuff that you have no idea where-else to put or that you don't want to spend time organising at that point in time. The reality is that, more often than not, a couple of weeks or months in you'll have forgotten about half the things that you put there in the first place.

But since a drawer is a small surface and, by definition, what you put there is "junk", it's a fairly easy decluttering project to tackle.

Bathroom Cabinet

If you have a bathroom cabinet, this is also a great small decluttering project since not much that you store there will have sentimental value (which are always the hardest items to let go of). So it should be easy to go through the things and discard what you no longer use or need.

Remember that you don't have to toss everything you don't want. You can always donate what is still in good shape and can be useful to someone else.

Pantry

The pantry is another place where it's very easy to sort through things. Use a pantry list to be on top of everything you have stored (you can find mine here) and pantry labels to keep it organised.

Fridge and Freezer

It seems obvious, right? The truth is that, especially in large fridges and freezers, some things end up forgotten in a corner or hidden behind others. Keeping a list of what you have in your freezer, for example, is a huge help. But going through what you have in your freezer and fridge and getting rid of what is past the use-by date or that you aren't going to use any longer is a quick - and very useful - decluttering exercise.

Kitchen Counters

The kitchen is one of the places where we tend to spend more time when we are at home and, as such, a lot of stuff tends to end up on the counters - the newspaper we read over breakfast, magazines, books, shopping lists, small appliances that we use so often we rarely bother to put them away, etc.

Getting rid of what you don't really need, putting away everything else and having your kitchen counters clean and empty of clutter creates a strong visual effect that will for sure boost your confidence in this decluttering exercise and help you gather the courage to tackle larger or more complicated cluttered spaces.

  1. Yes it is easier to throw things out that you are not sentimentally attached to. You have motivated me to get my medicine chest organized!
