Knit reusable gift bag

I know that Christmas is still a few months away, but I always love to start preparing for the holiday season early - and when I can combine that with getting rid of yarn scraps? Even better!

My mother in law gave my daughter a bag of yarn scraps a while ago. She used some of them, but then told me that she didn't want any of the red ones. So I was left with a host of little balls of red yarn. 

I decided to combine them with white (from my own stash of scraps) and create a candy-cane inspired gift bag. 

While I love crochet, every once in a while I miss knitting too, so this was the perfect little project. 

I used circular needles and knitted the bag as a spiral, randomly alternating the two colors, knitting with the red yarn and purling with the white yarn. 

Once it was done, I closed the bottom (hand sewing) and added a cord made of twisted red and white yarn (threaded through the top of the bag using a large eyed needle). 

It's not a very large gift bag, but it's perfectly sized for a book or two - which is just convenient since books are one of my favorite gifts to buy). 

It's also a great way to create a reusable gift bag - therefore contributing to the reduction of gift paper waste.

The unicorn hat & scarf

I've been really busy creating new items and fulfilling custom orders for my Etsy shop, but I still managed to find the time to finish the unicorn hat and scarf for my daughter. 

An in case you haven't noticed already, there's no unicorn anywhere, either in the hat or in the scarf...

 

Knit Fall Scarf

I'm really proud of myself because today I finished knitting my new fall scarf. 

There's absolutely nothing complicated about it, it's a simple design I developed as I knitted along (so, no pattern) but just the fact that I finished it before I actually need it is amazing just by itself.

At the beginning of summer I found this yarn on sale at the craft store and I fell in love with it. It's from Rosas Crafts, though I can't find it online anymore, so I have no idea if they are still selling it.

I thought it had the perfect colours for a fall scarf. It took me a while to decide how I wanted it knit. In the end I decided to have an opening in the knitting to pull one of the ends of the scarf through it and keep it closer to the neck without having to tie a knot or roll it around the neck.

Here's how it looks when I wear it (sorry about the quality, it wasn't easy to get a photo of myself this way):

I'm loving it! I love the colours, the swirling pattern of the yarn after knitting and the fact that it's warm but not too much, which makes it perfect for this coming season.

Even though I'm not ready for summer to end, I'm also looking forward to wearing my new fall scarf.

Easy Winter Hat - the boy version

Last week, when I posted the Easy Winter Hat Tutorial, I mentioned my son had requested a hat too. So I had to comply.

I followed my own pattern and used a very similar yarn, in boy colors. Originally my son wanted the pompom in green, but I couldn't find yarn to match, so we compromised on blue instead (with the promise that I will search for green yarn and make him a green hat next year).

And in case you're wondering, yes, I did make a matching scarf. I just skipped the pompoms in both ends because I thought they looked too girly, and opted for just the matching solid blue stripes. 

This knitted hat/scarfs thing is turning out to be a never ending story. It started with the hats I made for my daughter's dolls, just to get back into the habit of knitting, then my daughter wanted  some for herself and I posted them along with the tutorial. Now I'm posting the ones I made for my son. The end? Not really. Now my husband wants a scarf too. In black or very dark grey. Maybe I should just open a store and start taking orders...

Easy Winter Hat Tutorial

A couple of weeks ago I made some knitted hats and scarfs for my daughter's dolls using leftover yard I wanted to get rid of (check it here in case you missed it). Well, she liked it so much she asked me to make a hat for her too.

Now, I learned to knit a long time ago but it has never been one of my favorite hobbies, although recently I've been trying to get into the knitting mood again. I decided to start with simple projects and this hat is so easy to make it doesn't require any special skills.

Knitted Hats & Scarf...Doll Sized

My daughter is a very concerned "mother" to all her dolls. Whenever she receives a new one, the first thing she needs is to find a bed for the doll to sleep in.

Recently, because we've been having a very cold winter, she has been worried that her dolls don't have enough clothes and accessories to keep them warm. Since I've also been trying to get back into the habit of knitting, I searched my craft closet for some year leftovers and offered to make the dolls some winter hats.

The hats are very simple to make, just a piece of straight knitting, sewn at the sides and the top (pulling towards the center to create the pointed edge), and with a matching pom-pom on top. I made two because she has two similar sized dolls. Then, because I still had a bit of yarn left, I added a matching scarf.

And here are the happy dolls. Since the brunette was already the lucky owner of a fluffy scarf, the just got one hat:

The blond one got the other hat and the scarf (though if you ask me, she's bound to be still cold in those clothes, but I preferred not to remind my daughter of that because I was out of time to make anything else...).

It was a quick project but I think it turned out cute. Actually, my daughter loved the hats so much that she decided she wanted one for her too, in pink and purple, her favorite colors. I'm currently knitting it and I will probably post a small tutorial as soon as it is finished.
