Hello, and welcome! Despite the title, today's project is really a mix of knitting, sewing and crochet, but it's actually a pretty fun and original way to create a bag.
While I call this the triangle bag, it's actually made out of...a rectangle.
To make one of these, you need to start by knitting a rectangle, making sure the length is three times the width. My rectangle measured approximately 22 by 66 cm.
I used the yarn shown in the picture below (this was my first time using this yarn and I'll post a review soon) and 4 mm circular knitting needles.
There's really no special need to use circular needles for this project, regular needles work just fine. But I often take these small projects with me to work and knit on the train or during my lunch break, and I find circular needles better to hold all stitches in and keep the work from unraveling during transport.
I casted on 40 stitches and then just kept on knitting.
Once I had my rectangle, I cut a slightly larger piece of color coordinating fabric and used it to line one of the sides of the rectangle (this will be the inside of the bag). The lining is hand sewn all around.
Lining is optional, but unless you use a really sturdy yarn, the knit part will then to lose shape if left unlined, especially if you place something heavier (like a book, for example) inside your bag.
Once lining is complete, fold the edges of the rectangle as shown below, and pin in place (where my fingers are pointing):
Then fold again, as per the image below:
You will now have a shape like this (don't worry if the sides don't match exactly; once you start sewing everything will line up):
Now sew the diagonal line where my finger is pointing, on both sides of the bag:
And this is what you're have: an almost finished bag (seen from both sides):
Now you will need to add a cord and, if you want, a button to close the bag as well.
I made the cord using this old fashioned mini loom (that actually belongs to my daughter):
Sew the cord in place, and your bag is ready to be used (heart display courtesy, again, of my daughter who, by now, had decided the bag was going to be hers).
I actually used two buttons (to keep both sides of the bag symmetrical) and crocheted (with a 3.5 mm hook) a little ribbon (chains in the desired length, with single crochets on top).
I joined both edges of the crochet to form a loop, sewed them to one of the top sides of the bag, and them placed one of the buttons on top to cover the seam (this button is just decorative).
Then sew the other button on the other side of the bag, so that when you place the loop around it, the bag stays closed.
And that's it. Even though it looks like a lot of work, it was a pretty easy and quick project.
Have fun, and happy Tuesday!
