Basic Crochet Cowl: free pattern

Hello, and welcome. After the basic leg warmers, today I'm sharing here another very easy (and useful) crochet pattern: a cozy cowl for the cold fall and winter days.

It's a truly basic pattern, great for beginners.

Materials:
  • wool or a wool blend yarn. I used the fluffy Rosários4 alpaca mix you can see below. I bought (locally) two 50 g skeins but still had a good bit of the second skein left after this project.
  • a 7 mm crochet hook

Stitches used: chain, single crochet (US crochet terms), slip stitch.

Sizing: I made this cowl for me and I sized it to fit snugly on my neck. If you need the circle of the cowl larger, you should add more chains at the beginning, and if you want it higher or shorter, increase or decrease the number of rows accordingly.

Construction: the cowl is crocheted directly in a circle shape, so no sewing is necessary at the end.

Pattern:

Row 1: Chain 45 and join the last chain to the first one with a slip stitch to form a circle (make sure you don't twist the chains before joining the edges). Adjust the number of chains if necessary. The circle should be at least wide enough to pass through your head to your neck.

Once you have your circle, chain 2 and add one single over each chain until the end of the circle. Join with a slip stitch.

Row 2: Chain two, add one single crochet over each of the stitches from the previous row. Slip stitch to join.

Rows 3 to 45: repeat row 2. Add more or less rows if you want your cowl higher or lower.

Fasten off, cut the yarn and weave in ends.
