Hello, and welcome. With the cold season just around the corner, leg warmers are a must. With this basic crochet pattern you can whip up a pair of leg warmers in just a couple of hours.
It's a very easy pattern, great for beginners.
Materials:
- yarn (wool or acrylic, or a blend; I tend to prefer wool). I used yarn leftovers from another project, so at this point I don't even remember the brand name. I used the equivalent of approximately two skeins, but you may want to get a little extra in case you need to adjust sizing.
- a 5.5 mm crochet hook
Stitches used: chain, half double crochet (US crochet terms), slip stitch.
Sizing: I made these leg warmers for my daughter, so the number of stitches was adapted to her size, but you can easily adjust it to any size you want. Also, depending on the yarn you're using, a sizing adjustment may also be necessary.
Pattern:
Row 1: Chain 30 and join the last chain to the first one with a slip stitch to form a circle (make sure you don't twist the chains before joining the edges). Adjust the number of chains if necessary. The circle should be wide enough to pass snugly through your foot up to the ankle.
Once you have your circle, chain 2 and add one half double crochet over each chain until the end of the circle. Join with a slip stitch.
Row 2: Chain two, add one half double crochet in between each of the half double crochets from the previous row (instead of over each of the stitches from the previous row - see the image below). Slip stitch to join.
Rows 3 to 29: repeat row 2. Add more or less rows if you want your leg warmers higher or lower.
Last row: add one slip stitch over each of the stitches from the previous row. This row isn't really necessary but it will make the leg warmers more symmetrical top and bottom, since you also started with a foundation chain.
Fasten off, cut the yarn and weave in ends.
Repeat the process for the second leg warmer.
Additional note: I did not increase the number of stitches from the bottom to the top of the leg warmers. Wool or acrylic yarns usually have enough elasticity for that not to be required. In case you need to have the top of the leg warmers larger than the bottom, increase the number of stitches by adding two double crochets in the same space at the beginning of the row. In necessary, repeat every row, every other row or as you see fit until you reach the width you need.
