Hello, and welcome!
After the basic leg warmers and the basic crochet cowl, here is another very easy crochet pattern, just in time for the colder days of winter.
Materials:
- wool or a wool blend yarn. I used the soft and fluffy yarn from Rico Design in a warm mustard color
- 5 mm crochet hook
- a large eye blunt edge tapestry needle
Stitches used: chain, half double crochet, cross-stitch single crochet crochet (US crochet terms).
Sizing: I made this pair of fingerless gloves for my daughter, and as such the number of chains and the number of rows used were sized accordingly. The initial number of chains needs to be sufficient to go snugly around the largest part of your hands (rounded up to an even number of stitches +1). The final number of rows depends on how much you want the gloves to cover of your wrist and the base of your fingers.
Construction: each of the gloves is crocheted as a rectangle. Once it's completed, you need to fold it in half and sew one of the sides, leaving an opening for your thumb.
Row 1: Chain 25. Starting on the second chain from hook, add one half double crochet over each chain until the end (24 stitches in total).
Row 2: Chain two (counts as a stitch). Skip one stitch, add one single crochet in the next stitch, go back and add one single crochet over the stitch you skipped in the first place - effectively crossing one stitch over the other. Repeat the crossed stitches until the end of the row. adding one single crochet in the last space.
Row 3: chain 2, then add one half double crochet over each stitch from previous row.
Rows 4 to 17: alternate rows two and three until the end. Add as many rows as you need, but try to adjust them so that the last row is a half double crochet row, so that it matches your first row.
Repeat the process for the second glove. By now you will something like this:
Now fold each of the gloves as they would go around your wrist and sew the edge together, making sure you leave an opening for your thumb to pass through. Adjust the size and height of the thumb opening as you prefer, and then replicate for the second glove.
Weave in all ends and your new fingerless gloves are ready to be used.
This is a very quick project - not to mention it's useful too, so it's great as a last minute DIY Christmas gift idea!
Have fun, and happy Tuesday!
