Hello, and welcome! In a (not so) recent quest to use up my (overly large) yarn stash, I'm been making several crochet small baskets. Some of them I'm using to store other small on-going craft projects, others I'm saving to use as gift baskets later on.
In any case, after making a few I decided to write down the pattern and create a video tutorial too.
Yarn and hook: I used a wool blend yarn and a 6.5 mm crochet hook, but the pattern is very versatile and works great with cotton cord too.
Stitches used (US crochet terms): chain, slip-stitch, double crochet, back-loop half double crochet, crab stitch.
Pattern:
1) Make the base of the basket
Row 1: On a magic ring, chain 2 (counts as a stitch) and then add 11 more double crochets into the ring (12 stitches in total). Slip stitch to join last stitch to the initial chains.
Row 2: Chain 2 (counts as a stitch) and then add 2 double crochets over every stitch from row 1 (24 stitches in total). Slip stitch to join last stitch to the initial chains.
Row 3: Chain 2 (counts as a stitch) and then alternate 2 double crochets and 1 double crochet over the stitches from row 2 (36 stitches in total). Slip stitch to join last stitch to the initial chains.
Row 4: Chain 2 (counts as a stitch) and then alternate 2 double crochets on the same stitch with 1 double crochet over the following 2 stitches (48 stitches in total). Slip stitch to join last stitch to the initial chains.
2) Make the sides of the basket
Row 1: Chain 2 and then add one half double crochet on the back loops of very stitch from the previous row. Slip stitch to join last stitch to the initial chains.
Rows 2 - 5: Repeat row 1 (total of 5 rows of back loop half double crochets).
Row 6: Chain 2, add 8 back loop half double crochets (HDCs), chain 5, skip 5 stitches, add 19 back loop HDCs, chain 5, skip 5 stitches, add the remaining back loop HDCs until the end. Slip stitch to join last stitch to the initial chains.
The chains will create the handles of the basket.
Row 7: Chain 2, one single crochet over each stitch from previous row, including the handle chains. Slip stitch to join last stitch to the initial chains.
Row 8: Chain 2, add one crab stitch (single crochet done backwards) over each stitch from previous row. Slip stitch to join last stitch to the initial chains.
And, of course, in addition to the written pattern above you can also watch the video tutorial:
Have fun, and happy Monday!
