How to crochet a solid granny square - pattern & video tutorial

Hello, and welcome! Remember the crochet backed tile coasters I posted about a couple of weeks ago? At the time I promised I would also share the pattern for the crochet squares I made, and so here it is - not only the written pattern, but also the video tutorial, which is perfect for crochet beginners.

These solid squares are very easy to make, the pattern can be easily adjusted to any size, and can be used to make bags, blankets and a series of other larger projects.
Here's the full written pattern (US crochet terms):

Row 1: on a magic ring, chain 5, and add 3 double crochets into the ring. Then *chain 2 and add 3 double crochets*. Repeat the pattern between * twice more, but on the last repeat, add only 2 double crochets and slip stitch to the third initial chain (from the five you started with) - these chains will form the last double crochet of that side of the square. You will have 3 stitches on each side of your square (plus the chains in the corners).

So, for this first row, you have:
  • magic ring
  • 5 chains
  • 3 double crochets
  • 2 chains
  • 3 double crochets
  • 2 chains
  • 3 double crochets
  • 2 chains
  • 2 double crochets
  • slip stitch to the 3rd of the 5 initial chains
Pull the tip of the yarn of your magic ring to close the center gap.

Row 2: slip stitch into the corner, then chain 5. *Add 2 double crochets on that same corner, then 1 double crochet over each of the stitches from the previous row and 2 double crochets in the following corner. Chain 2* and repeat the pattern between * twice more. In the last side of the square, add 2 double crochets in the corner and then 1 double crochet over each stitch from the previous row (including the initial slip stitch you started the row with). You will have 7 stitches on each side of your square (plus the chains in the corners).

So, in this second row, you will have:
  • slip stitch into the next corner space
  • 5 chains
  • 7 double crochets (2 in the same corner space, 3 over the stitches from previous row, 2 in the next corner space)
  • 2 chains
  • 7 double crochets
  • 2 chains
  • 7 double crochets
  • 2 chains
  • 6 double crochets (including one over the initial slip stitch)
  • slip stitch to the 3rd of the 5 initial chains (which will form the 7th stitch on that side of the square)

Row 3: slip stitch into the corner, then chain 5. *Add 2 double crochets on that same corner, then 1 double crochet over each of the stitches from the previous row and 2 double crochets in the following corner. Chain two* and repeat the pattern between * twice more. In the last side of the square, add 2 double crochets in the corner and then 1 double crochet over each stitch from the previous row (including the initial slip stitch you started the row with). You will have 11 stitches on each side of your square (plus the chains in the corners).

So, in this third row, you will have:
  • slip stitch onto the next corner space
  • 5 chains
  • 11 double crochets (2 in the same corner space, 7 over the stitches from previous row, 2 in the next corner space)
  • 2 chains
  • 11 double crochets
  • 2 chains
  • 11 double crochets
  • 2 chains
  • 10 double crochets (including one over the initial slip stitch)
  • slip stitch to the 3rd of the 5 initial chains

Row 4: slip stitch into the corner, then chain 5. You will have 15 stitches on each side of your square (plus the chains in the corners).

So, in this fourth row, you will have:
  • slip stitch onto the next corner space
  • 5 chains
  • 15 double crochets (2 in the same corner space, 11 over the stitches from previous row, 2 in the next corner space)
  • 2 chains
  • 15 double crochets
  • 2 chains
  • 15 double crochets
  • 2 chains
  • 14 double crochets (including one over the initial slip stitch)
  • slip stitch to the 3rd of the 5 initial chains

If you want to add more rows to your solid granny square, you just need to follow the same pattern as above, making sure each new row grows by 4 stitches in each side, plus the corner chains.

And if you prefer visual guidance alongside the written pattern, check out the video tutorial below:

Have fun, and happy Wednesday!
