Sometimes inspiration strikes when we least expect. When I found a box full of small tiles in the bottom shelf of the storage shed in my grandfather's old house, I knew I wanted to turn at least a few of them into coasters.
These were the first two I tackled:
But because I knew we would use the coasters in our wooden kitchen and dining room tables (not to mention the coffee table in front of the TV where the kids usually plant their tea or milk cups), I had to somehow cover the rough back of the tiles:
The solution: crochet.
So I started by crocheting a square (I'll share a pattern for these squares soon):
Once the square almost covered the back of the tile, I pulled and fitted the corners to the corners of the tile (not cutting the yarn or removing the crochet hook):
Then I added one row of single crochet (skipping the chains at the corners, to make it tighter and hold the crochet bottom of the coaster in place):
This way the crochet cover stays in place when in use, but can also be easily removed for washing, if necessary.
Since I used yarn from my stash and didn't buy anything else to complete this project, it totally counts towards my 202 destashing goal.
And now I have to find other ways to use up the rest of the tiles. Felt backed coasters next time? We'll see.
Have fun, and happy Tuesday!
