Hello, and welcome. Today I'm showing off a kitchen towel I made from scratch and to which I added a pretty crochet edge.
I didn't exactly planned this as a tutorial, but I'll try to describe the process below in case you want to replicate it yourself.
I started with a rectangle of this cotton waffle fabric. I actually bought two of these, the pink and the light blue, a while ago. They were being sold as scraps in one of the fabric shops I usually go to in Lisbon, and I immediately knew they would be perfect as kitchen towels.
It took me a while, but I finally hemmed the pink fabric and then created the crochet border.
The border was very easy to make. I used the yarn below (there are lots of colors available, this color in particular is called antique pink), and a 2.5 mm hook:
After adding the first row (single crochets over the hem, with two chains in between), I added a row of single crochets all around.
Row 3 consisted again of the same single crochet/2 chains combo, and then for the final row I alternated 6 double crochets with a slip stitch over the chains from the previous row (6 double crochets on one chain space, one slip stitch in the next chain space, and so on).
For the corners, I just doubled the number of stitches: 4 chains in the first row, 4 single crochets in the second, four chains in the third row and twelve double crochets in the last row.
In case you are trying to create a similar edging and have any questions or the explanation above isn't clear enough, feel free to leave a comment and I'll try to help you the best way I can.
I still have the blue fabric untouched. I'm planning to repeat the process, although I expect I will change the border a bit next time. I'll share it here too as soon as I finish it (hopefully soon).
This turned out SO beautifully, what a pretty idea
