Waffle Stitch Blanket - with velvet yarn

Hello, and welcome! This year is going to be known as the year of new blankets at our house. And it all started with this one...

When I decided to make a large (very large) throw blanket for our living room, I also took a leap of faith and used velvet yarn for the first time ever (because even though I've been crocheting for many years, I had really never used velvet yarn before). 

But this Luxury Velvet from Schachenmayr was calling my name. It looked incredibly soft and it came in just the perfect colors to match our decor. 

 

 

I do love the names Schachenmayr gives to their yarn shades:

• Fox (the coppery yarn)
• Bear (the dark brown)
• Elephant (the gray)

 

The blanket was made using a waffle stitch, and I used an 8 mm hook (even though the yarn recommends a 6 mm hook, for the waffle stitch I always like to use a larger size hook to avoid having the stitches too tight).

For the blanket I started with 146 chains (I told you it was large), in order to get 144 stitches in each row. 

The stripes are symmetrical, so the rows are as follows: 

• 14 rows of "elephant"/gray yarn (which is equivalent to a height of 7 "waffle squares")
  
• 14 rows of "bear"/brown yarn
• 27 rows of "fox"/copper yarn
  
• 14 rows of "bear"/brown yarn
• 14 rows of "elephant"/gray yarn

 

 

 I used 10 balls of yarn of each color, though oddly, I had more leftover of the copper (fox) yarn...

 

The blanket is 200 cm wide by 180 cm high, so two of us can easily snuggle under it. The advantage of the waffle stitch, however, is that it's very easy to adjust sizes, since you just need to chain a multiple of 3 + 2 chains to start. As long as you end up with a number of stitches that is a multiple of 3, you can get the pattern to work in any size you want.

As soon as I finished this blanket, everyone at home started fighting to use it (and no, telling my kids they can both use it at the same time doesn't work). So what did I do? I bought more velvet yarn (another brand, though, because Schachenmayr Luxury Velvet doesn't come in the colors they wanted) and planned two more waffle stitch blankets, which I hope to share here soon too.
