Hello, and welcome! There's another video in the Crochet for Absolute Beginners series up on my YouTube Channel.
Episode 8 is about choosing the right crochet hook for a project.
Picking the most appropriate crochet hook isn't always a straightforward process. Obviously the pattern and the yarn are the most important factors, but other subjective details (like how hard you tend to pull the yarn, for example) are often also at play and influence how your project will actually look like in the end.
Sometimes it's even a process of trial and error and you may have to test working the same yarn with different hooks to decide which way looks better.
In any case. in the video I tried to keep it as simple as possible, bearing in mind that this series I've been building on my channel is dedicated to beginners. Check it out and let me know what you think!
Hi, Teresa! I just subscribed to your YouTube channel and I'm so excited to check out your videos and learn. Blessings to you!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much!
DeleteI saw you have a channel too, so I subscribed as well!
DeleteI thought you did a good job introducing what can be a much larger conversation into a basic beginning point where do I start.
ReplyDeleteThe differences in yarn even within what is supposed to be the same weight and how tight/loose people crochet can really vary how large or small a piece will come out. While it can be intimidating understanding that can also be freeing because it allows you to realize gauge can tell you a great deal about how close you and the designer are to crochet styles. If the pattern calls for a g hook with worsted and you are at an e to make gauge you may have lighter yarn or you crochet tighter than the designer or a combo of both.
Yes, it depends a lot on gauge. I tend to pull my stitches tight (I'm getting better, but I used to be terrible at that), so I usually test different hook sizes with the same yarn to see how it works best for me.
