Basic Crochet Materials and Supplies - new crochet for beginners video series

Hello, and welcome. I have been toying with my YouTube Channel and adding a lot of videos. And I have started a new series: Crochet for Absolute Beginners.

The first episode is about basic crochet materials.

Although we all tend to go a bit overboard with craft supplies once in a while (which translates to about all the time in my case...), there are only a few things you really need to start.

You need yarn (if course!) and a crochet hook. And, honestly, you could almost stop there.

Although there are of course a zillion types of yarn, cotton, wool and acrylic are the ones I find the most appropriate for beginners. They are also pretty accessible price-wise, which is great for those that are still starting a new hobby.

My personal preference is cotton (for home projects & bags) or acrylic (mostly for blankets, although I haven't crocheted any large ones in a while).

I'm not picky in terms of hooks. I learned to crochet with aluminium hooks and I still use them a lot. Here's part of my stash of hooks:

The ones in the pouch are the most recent and the only ones I own with a soft grip cover. I got them from Amazon last year and, for the price, I think they are fairly good quality.

The two other basic supplies I added on the video were a tapestry needle and stitch markers.

Tapestry needles are obviously needed to weave in ends. My personal preferences there would be for self-weaving ends or a robotic needle that could do all the work without my intervention. Since neither of those things exist as far as I know, I work with whichever needle I have on hand (as long as the yarn fits through the eye, it's Ok).

Stitch markers are not entirely necessary, especially because you can use lots of things to replace them. I only got my first markers recently and up to then I just used a paper clip or tied a bit of contrasting yarn in the place I wanted to mark. But I added them anyway in the video because markers are usually happy and colorful and beginners will probably have more success using them than with any of the cheaper alternatives.

Check out the video and let me know what you think!

Have fun and enjoy your week,
