How to Use Essential Oils to Help You Sleep Better

To be honest, I had never tried essential oils until recently and I had a general distrust regarding them. But a friend started learning to use essential oils and convinced me to give them a try. I have tried one to boost the immune system and another for my chronic shoulder pain - and so far so good. 



But did you know that there is scientific proof that essential oils can help you sleep better? However, other than slathering yourself (which you really don’t want to do) with oil, or buying an expensive diffuser, how can you use these essential oils for sleep to help you out in your sleep routine?

There are many ways to incorporate essential oils into your sleep routine. You can use lotions, candles, diffusers, and soaps. If you’re crafty like me, you can easily make some of these different items at home.

Here are a few ideas to incorporate these essential oils into your sleep:

Lotions

You can make your own bedtime lotion by putting a few drops of your favorite essential oils, maybe some lavender and roman chamomile (lavender is definitely a favorite of mine), into a bottle of unscented lotion This also makes a great DIY gift for friends.



Candles

When making candles, after you have melted your wax and let it cool for a little bit but before you’ve poured it into your candle jar, you can add a few drops of essential oil like sweet marjoram or bergamot into the wax. By waiting for the wax to cool a bit you allow the wax to still be moldable but not hot enough for the oils to dissipate because of the heat.



Soaps

Another way to use essential oils for sleep is to add them to your homemade soaps. When your soap mix has thickened to a light-medium color but before it is hard you can add the essential oils without any worry. This is perfect for people that love to shower or bathe right before bed.

  1. I just bought a few essential oils today after reading a book about them (and hemming and hawing for over a year about trying them!). I was pretty surprised to read about all the uses for essential oils.
