Although I desperately need to start working on Christmas gifts, first I had to make a gift for a friend's birthday. I wanted to make her a clutch, and decided to use a striped fabric in colors I knew she would like.
Then I just couldn't find in my stash a lining that matched, so I switched to felt instead. And loved the idea.
I created the lining first, folding and sewing the piece of felt in an envelope shape.
I did the same with the other fabric, leaving extra fabric at the top to fold over.
Because I wanted the clutch to have a larger base, I sewed off triangles at each of the bottom sides of both pieces. I forgot to take a picture of this step, but you can see how it looked from the outside below.
I placed the lining inside (wrong sides together) and hand stitched the two edges of the clutch.
To keep the clutch flap closed, I added two small circles of velcro.
Just because I could, I also created an embellishment: a circle of felt, a yo-yo and a metal flower that came with a scrap booking kit I bought a while ago.
And then, as I had just enough fabric left over, I made a matching gift bag, using my unlined gift bags with pretty seams tutorial (including ribbon to tie a bow and keep the gift bag closed).
I made all this on Saturday afternoon, so both the clutch and the bag came together quickly. I have made felt lined bags before, but I had never tried to use felt as lining in smaller items.
I did like the outcome, though, and found it easier than using regular fabric as lining, especially since I didn't have to include batting.
One gift made. Lots more to go.
