Yes, we are still in the middle of summer, and I'm definitely not ready for it to end. But at the same time, I always try to start making holidays gifts early, so I've been researching a bit about the crafting trends for the rest of the year.
1. Textures are in
Apparently soft, touchable textures will continue to dominate seasonal decor and crafting:
- Chunky knits and crochets
- Fluffy wreaths
- Needle-felted projects (something I have yet to try)
- Tufted wall hangings
Layering multiple textures creates a handcrafted, collected-over-time look that's perfect for both fall and the holiday season. Embroidery, visible mending, sashiko-inspired stitching, cross stitch, and hand quilting seem to still be gaining to gain popularity as relaxing hobbies (I wish I had the time to fully dedicate myself to some serious quilting...oh, well, maybe wen I retire?).
And, of course, many of these projects can be worked on a little at a time while traveling, watching television, or enjoying a quiet evening by the fire (which is also why starting your holidays crafting early is better, this way you can enjoy yourself without feeling overwhelmed). Small, portable projects (like crochet keychains, mini cross stitch kits or pocket journals, for example) are especially perfect when you're pressed for time, because they are affordable, beginner-friendly, and easy to finish in a single sitting.
2. Handmade is best
(I always said so)
Instead of buying seasonal decorations every year, more crafters are making heirloom-quality pieces they'll be able to use for many years to come. Reusing and upcycling materials you already have at home for this is also a great eco-friendly idea. Popular projects include:
- Embroidery hoop wreaths
- Fabric pumpkins
- Quilted table runners
- Handmade stockings
- Decorative pillows
- Wood bead garlands
The "homemade home" movement emphasizes visible stitching, natural materials, and handcrafted charm over perfectly-polished-but-often-meaningless store bought decor.
And no, you don't need to be an advanced crafter to make any of the above. Just look for easy tutorials online and go from there.
3. Earthy colors are in this years' palette
And, apparently, trending colors include:
- Rust
- Cinnamon
- Olive green
- Moss
- Deep cranberry
- Mustard gold
- Forest green
- Midnight navy
- Cream
- Warm taupe
A few metallic touches in antique brass, copper, and bronze can also provide subtle sparkle without overwhelming handmade projects.
4. Sustainable & upcycled crafting
As I already mentioned above, repurposing materials is just as important as creating something useful and beautiful. These projects help reduce waste while adding one-of-a-kind character to handmade items. Popular ideas include:
- Sweater pumpkins
- Denim ornaments
- Scrap fabric garlands or wreaths
- Vintage lace embellishments
- Reclaimed wood signs
- Recycled paper gift wrap (or reusable fabric gift bags)
5. Crafting together
Apparently, though, one of the biggest trends isn't a project—it's how people create. Craft nights with friends, holiday DIY parties, and community workshops continue to grow in popularity. From paint nights to ornament exchanges, crafting is increasingly becoming a social activity. I can't say that I have tried any of these recently, but I do craft a lot with may daughter now that she's older, and I'm sure that counts too...
Fall and Winter 2026 are shaping up to be seasons of comfort, creativity, and connection. Whether you're assembling a cozy wreath, crocheting pumpkins, or making personalized holiday gifts, the focus is on creating handmade pieces that tell a story and can be used and enjoyed for years to come.
The biggest takeaway from this season's trends is simple: embrace texture, choose natural materials, reuse and upcycle, and don't be afraid to let your handmade touch show. After all, it's those little imperfections that make your creations truly special - just like life itself!
