Hello, and welcome! Remember the boxy school bag I made for my daughter at the end of summer last year (find it here)? Well, at the same time I also created a matching boxy zipper pouch, that my daughter uses as a pencil pouch.
So today I'm finally posting here the tutorial for the boxy zipper pouch:
What you need:
- four rectangles of fabric (two for the exterior and two for the lining). I used the same fabric for both, and my rectangles were 15 cm high by 25 cm wide.
- two rectangles of batting (same size as the fabric)
- two small strips of fabric, mine were 10 cm long by 5 cm wide. This fabric will end up inside the pouch, so you can use the same fabric as your lining or a color coordinating one. Bias tape works well for this purpose too.
- two small squares of fabric (indicatively, 5 x 5 cm). Same as above applies.
- one zipper
- sewing thread in a matching color
Instructions:
First, you need to sew the zipper. Place one piece of exterior fabric and one piece of lining, right sides together, with one side of the zipper in between as shown below, and the batting on top of one of one of the wrong sides of the fabric:
Pin in place and sew along the edge:
Fold the two pieces of fabric back and you should have something like this:
Now, top stitch along the edge of the fabric (where my finger is pointing in the photo above) and repeat the whole process for the other side of the pouch:
Now put the zipper pull in place:
Side note: this works perfectly with any kind of zipper, it doesn't need to have a separable zipper pull. The only difference is that you will need to fold the fabric when you sew the second side of the zipper and then turn the pouch inside out to get the same result as in the photo above.
Turn the pouch inside out and, with the zipper centered as shown below, trim the excess fabric and zipper, pin in place and sew the shorter sides of the pouch (make sure the zipper is not entirely closed, otherwise you won't be able to turn the pouch back inside out again once you finish sewing):
Fold your small rectangles of fabric bias tape-like and cover the sides of the pouch you have just sewn, to hide the seams:
Now cut 1 cm squares of the corners flattened pouch (as shown below), fold diagonally and join the edges, and cover them using the small squares of fabric (again, folded bias tape-like):
And that's it! Turn the pouch back inside out and it's ready to be used:
