Scrappy Zipper Pouch

What can you make with scraps of fabric, scraps of batting and scraps of bias tape? A scrappy zipper pouch, of course!

Let me show you how.

I started with a bunch of scraps. Actually everything in this pouch but the zipper and the sewing thread were leftovers from other projects.

I started by cutting two equal rectangles out of the bit of leftover batting. This defined the end size of the pouch. And then I cut the bits of fabric also into squares or rectangles and sewed them directly onto the batting:

To make sure I didn't end up with raw edges, I folded the edges in before sewing:

When the entire surface of the batting piece was covered in fabric, I cut off the excess and top stitched everything with a zig-zag stitch:

Here are the two sides of the pouch:

Then I added the zipper and the lining. As I used fabric scraps for the lining as well, each of the lining rectangles was cut from a different fabric.

Since I was intent on using a scrap of bias tape (leftover from my sewing machine cover), instead of the usual way to sew the zipper pouches, leaving an opening on the lining to turn inside out, I sewed everything together directly. This way the seams would be visible on the inside of the pouch, and so I used the bias tape to cover them.

The only thing you need to make sure when sewing like this is that the zipper is at least half open, since that will be the opening that will allow you to turn the pouch inside out.

Here is the finished pouch, already with the faux leather tassel I love to add to my zippers:

Overall, this was a pretty fun project. And since I have a zillion fabric scraps more I will sewing more of these in the future for sure.

Have fun, and happy Tuesday!
