Hello, and welcome! Today I'm sharing here my quick weekend project: a small crochet drawstring bag. I made it to use as a gift bag but it can be used for a lot of other things.
Find the pattern below.
I used cotton yarn leftovers in deep red and light blue, and a 2.5 mm crochet hook.
Here's the pattern:
Row 3: chain 3 (counts as a stitch). Add two double crochets in the next space and one double crochet in the following one. Alternate two double crochets on the same space with one double crochet in the following space until the end of the row (36 stitches in total). Join with a slip stitch.
Row 4: chain 3 (counts as a stitch). Add two double crochets in the next space and one double crochet in the following two spaces. Alternate two double crochets on the same space with two double crochets in each of the following spaces (2-1-1) until the end of the row (48 stitches in total).
Rows 6-8: repeat row 5. Since you are not increasing the number of stitches anymore (always 48 from now onwards), you will start to see the bag take shape.
Row 9: Switch to the blue yarn. Chain 3; Add one double crochet over the next stitch and then go back and add one double crochet in the previous stitch (where you started the chain), effectively crossing the double crochet stitches. *Skip one stitch, double crochet in the next one and then double crochet back over the stitch you skipped before.* Repeat the part between * until the end of the row. Join with a slip stitch.
In case you have any doubts about the cross stitch double crochet, you can check my video tutorial below:
Row 10: repeat row 9.
Rows 11-12: red yarn/repeat row 5.
Rows 13-14: blue yarn/same as row 9.
Rows 15-16: red yarn/repeat row 5.
Rows 17-18: blue yarn/repeat row 9.
Switch back to the red yarn until the end.
Row 19: repeat row 5.
Row 20: Chain three. Add two double crochets in the following two stitches. Chain one, skip one stitch, *add three double crochets over the next tree stitches, chain one, skip one stitch.* Repeat the pattern between * until the end of the row. Slip stitch to join.
Row 21: same as row 5, adding one double crochet over the stitches and the chain spaces from previous row (make sure you still have 48 stitches).
Row 22 (the top border): *Skip two stitches, and on the third stitch add the following: 4 double crochets, chain 2, 4 double crochets (all on the same stitch. Skip two stitches, slip stitch on the third stitch.* Repeat the pattern between * until the end of the row.
Cut the yarn and weave in all ends.
Cord: to make the cord to close the bag, chain 71, and then add one single crochet over each of the chains, starting on the second chain from hook (add more or less chains if you want your cord longer or shorter).
Weave in the cord though the chain spaces in row 20, and your little bag is ready to be used:
Pull the cord to close the bag and tie a pretty bow:
You can use the same pattern and make the bag all in one color, or add as many different colors as you want. It's a great way to turn yarn scraps into something useful!
Have fun, and happy crocheting!
