How to Throw a White Elephant Party + Fun Gift Ideas for Attendees (free printables)

Blind gift exchanges are extremely popular around the holiday season, as people are looking for fun games to play at family dinners, friend reunions, and office parties. The White Elephant gift exchange game involves “stealing” gifts from other players in order to take home the best gift.

In order for you to throw the ultimate White Elephant Party this holiday season, we have put together a party guide, a guide to the ins and outs of the game, and a list of fun White Elephant gifts.

How to Throw a White Elephant Party

There are many variations of White Elephant parties, but there are traditional features that are common across the board. Here is the basic way to throw a White Elephant party, but feel free to add your own twist!

1. Invite Friends and Tell Them to Bring a Gift

Gifts and guests are the two essentials to playing the White Elephant game. Send out invites to each of your guests, informing them that they are expected to bring one wrapped gift. Try sending out cute physical invitations, such as these.

2. Decorate and Prepare for a Party

Decorate for a party! Many White Elephant party hosts will feature white foods, white utensils, white flowers, and white tablecloths. Party hosts will often make the White Elephant party a traditional dinner party. If you choose this route, consider putting out place cards, such as these.

3. Display Gifts as Your Guests Arrive

As your guests arrive, display the wrapped gifts. You can even add cute gift tags, like these, to each of the gifts. Have some wrapping materials aside in case a guest arrives with an unwrapped gift.

4. Review the White Elephant Game Rules

There are many variations of the traditional White Elephant game, but this is the original way to play. As guests arrive, have them draw a number from a hat and have them hold onto it. This number will determine the order of gameplay.

Review these rules with your guests upon starting the game:

  • To kick off the game, the guest who drew number one will pick a gift from the pile and choose to unwrap it or keep it wrapped.
  • The next player now has the opportunity to choose a gift from the pile or steal a previous player’s gift.
  • New gifts from the pile can be opened, stolen gifts that are unopened cannot be opened. This pattern will continue until everyone has gone.
  • Once everyone has gone, player one will go again. Player one can choose to steal a gift or keep the one they have.
  • After this, the gift each person has will be what they leave with. Any unopened gifts can now be opened.
