Hello, and welcome! Today I'm sharing here a very useful tutorial on how to quickly make a flat zipper pouch.
These pouches are great. Below I will let you know what I made this particular pouch for, but they can be used for makeup, pens and pencils and a variety of other things.
To make it quicker, I didn't cover the inside seams. They are not visible when you open the pouch (you would have to turn it inside out to actually see the seams), but if that bothers you, you can always cover them with bias tape. It will lengthen the process a bit but it works just fine.
I any case, let's start at the beginning. For the bag you will need fabric for the exterior, fabric for the lining, interfacing (I used the iron-on variety) and a zipper.
You will need two pieces of each type of fabric, one slightly higher than the other, as shown below:
Cut equivalent pieces of lining and interfacing:
Cut your smaller piece of fabric (and lining in half), as shown below:
Do the same with the equivalent lining piece. Your zipper will be sewn in between the two halves:
Pin the exterior and lining pieces to the zipper and sew them in place, first with one half and then the other:
Once the fabrics are sewn to the zipper, top stitch close to the edge (this is optional, but makes the pouch look much better, and also helps to avoid situations where the fabric gets stuck in the zipper when you use open or close the pouch).
Repeat with in order to have both halves of the fabric and lining sewn to the zipper and top stitched. This is on how it will look, front and back:
Now place the other parts of the purse on top of the one you've just sewn, as shown below (right sides together) and pin in place:
Make sure the zipper is partially open and sew all around the fabric. Trim the excess fabric and zipper edges. Use pinking shears to avoid fraying.
Turn inside out through the zipper opening and your pouch is ready to be used.
This is how it will look inside. As you can see the seams, even if just finished with the pinking shears, are not visible.
I made this pouch for a very specific purpose, and that's why it is on the smaller size: I'm using it as storage for small cutlery, as part of a baby meal gift set I will share some more details about over the next few days.
