The list will help you to keep track of all the essential items (those you can't really leave home without) while also making sure your bags don't overflow with all those extra-just-in-case-maybe things that will weight you down.
Print the checklist and take some time to think through what you really need to take with you on vacation. Then stick to to the list and tick off items as you pack them.
By breaking down the items by categories it will be easier to keep track of all of them, but there's also a miscellaneous category at the end of the list to include anything else you want to add.
