Felt envelope clutch with ribbon closure

Hello, and welcome. Today I'm going to show you how to make a simple felt envelope clutch with a cute ribbon and bow closure. And the best of it? It can be done in fifteen minutes or less. Because yes, it is that simple!

Check out the tutorial below:

Materials needed:
  • felt in your favorite color. Use the thickest felt you can find, because if the felt is too soft the clutch won't hold its shape. Decide which size you want your clutch to be and fold the felt piece in a way that the back side is at least 1/3 longer than the front:

  • Matching sewing thread (or fabric glue for a no-sew version)
  •  A piece of ribbon (ribbon leftovers are great for this project, they just have to be long enough to tie a bow)

Instructions:

  • Cut the felt and pin in place where you want your fold to be:

  •   Sew down the sides (or glue them you're going for the no-sew version). I used my sewing machine for quicker results, but you can hand sew it too, either with a simple stitch or with a blanket stitch.

  • Pin the middle of the ribbon to the front of the clutch, in a place where it will be covered by the flap:

  • Sew (or glue) the ribbon in place, as shown below:

  •  Find the place where the flap overlaps the stitched ribbon and mark two parallel slits, using a pencil, chalk or disappearing ink:

  •  Using scissors or an x-acto knife, cut the slits. Then pass one end of the ribbon through each of the holes. Tie a knot, and then a bow:

And...you're done. Now you can make these in any size you want. I made one larger and one smaller in orange:

And two more in hot pink. Some ribbons are longer than others because I was using scraps...

Depending on size, you can use this tutorial to make clutches, tablet covers, book holders or even phone pouches. They work great as gift packages too, especially because of the cute bows.

If you prefer, here's the video version of the tutorial:

And because these particular clutches were made using only materials I already had at home, they count as a great  destashing project too.

  1. This is such a lovely idea. This would work well with a felted jumper/sweater. they often come out really thick when you felt them. Pinning.

    1. Yes, I think that would work great too. As long as the felt is able to hold its shape without the need for lining or batting, it's fine. Well, if you need to add lining it's Ok too, but the process will take longer than those 10 to 15 minutes...
