Santa Hat Headband - tutorial & pattern

Hello and welcome! Today I'm sharing with you a Santa hat headband I made for my daughter's ballet class Christmas show. I have no idea what the girls will be dancing exactly, but parents had to produce the Santa hat headbands by this week at the latest. I searched several stores last week for mini Santa hats and found none, so I had to go the usual route - I made my own.

Here's the tutorial in case you want to make one too:

What you need:
  • the mini Santa hat pattern (two pages) - download here
  • red felt
  • white glitter EVA foam (or white felt)
  • matching sewing thread
  • polyester filling
  • one small white pompom
  • one plain headband

Instructions
  • download and print the pattern.
  • trace the pattern onto the felt and the EVA foam and cut the pieces

  • glue the EVA foam piece onto the edge of the hat piece (sew if you're using felt)

  • Fold the hat piece right sides together and sew the side seam

  •  Sew the round piece at the bottom of the hat, leaving a small opening. Turn inside out through the opening, fill the bottom half of the hat with polyester filling (you can fill it whole, but I preferred to leave the top empty for it to fold a bit). Sew the opening closed. The bottom of your hat should look like this:

  • Glue or sew the pompom at the top

See why I left the top of the hat empty? Now it can move like this and look more realistic:

  • Glue the hat in place over the headband (my daughter chose to have hers slightly to the side) and then sew a smaller piece of felt over it, to make sure it stays in place:

Here's how it looks when you wear it:

Minnie Mouse had to try it on too...

...and now my son wants one as well, so I guess I'll be making these for the whole family this Christmas.

Have fun, and happy Monday,

  1. Wish I was more arty and tried more of these type of things - perhaps a resolution for the New Year

    1. It's a great resolution! DYIs don't have to be difficult. In most cases you can get by with scissors and glue if you want to follow the easiest route. Once you discover that you really you can make things by yourself, you never want to stop again.
