Hum. Check.

Princess-witch-fairy costume & accessories?

Check. I guess. I'm still not sure what a princess-witch-fairy is exactly, so this will have to do.

Then we are ready for Halloween!

Now, the back story. Remember this post about my Halloween costumes-in-progress? I bought all the supplies I needed at the beginning of October and then started working on and off in the costumes whenever I had some free time. Then we all got sick and for a few days I was not in the right state of mind to get anything done. In the meantime, my son's best friend decided he wanted to be a bat for Halloween as well, so his mother and I got together at my house on Saturday morning and Sunday afternoon.

We finished late last evening but we did manage to get everything done. Or almost everything. She still has some stitches pending and I have to reinforce the elastic in the princess-witch-fairy hat to make sure it lasts at least a few hours, since they get to wear their costumes to school next Friday.

My son has actually dressed as a bat for the past two Halloweens but he needed new wings this time. The bat hat is the same as last year. I had limited time and I already had to make one hat from scratch for his friend, so I just adjusted the ears and the size of the strap that goes around the neck to keep the hat in place.

I'll be pairing the hat + wings with a black t-shirt and black pants and shoes (not pictured below) and he's ready to go.

The wings are cut from black felt and then I added rows of grey stitches (using a double needle) to mark the folds in the wings.

This is not my original idea, so I'm not posting a pattern. If you want more details check this post by Dana @ Made

The princess-witch-fairy concept was slightly more difficult. When I found some sparkling tulle at the fabric store I knew I had hit the jackpot.

So I decided to make a tutu and sticked to the almost no sew variety to save time. Basically I just measured around my daughter's waist, cut and sew the two ends of a piece of large black elastic.

Then I cut strips of tulle...

...and tied them around the elastic. Each knot is formed by one strip of purple and two strips of black, to make it fluffier. When doing this, it is better to stretch the elastic a bit, to make sure you cover it all around and there will be no empty spaces once the tutu is worn and the elastic is naturally stretched around the waist (so that is why I put it over the back of a chair, in case you're wondering about the picture above).

And yes, if ended up fairly fluffy:

I was going to pair it with a black t-shirt (exactly the same I bought for my son, just a smaller size) but then I got the message that simple black t-shirts are not enough for princess-witch-fairies and had to embellish it a little.

The stars were cut from a glittering rubber-like material I got at the craft store (and that must have a technical name, I just have no idea what else to call it other than glittering rubber-like material) and glued to the shirt over pieces of purple tulle left over from the tutu. Oh, and the starts were cut using a cookie cutter to draw the shape onto the back of the glittering rubber-like material because I'm practical like that.

The tutu and the shirt are to be used with black shoes, a pointy hat and a wand ('cause every princess-witch-fairy needs a wand, right?).

The hat that was originally from my son's first Halloween costume when he was four (he never wanted to dress up before then) and wanted to be a magician. I used the same frame and just added some tulle to make it seem fairy-like.

The wand also came from the same magician costume (although it is smaller now because in the meantime the kids managed to break it in half). Even the golden star was already there, I just added the tulle to make sure it matched the rest of the outfit.

Well, it was almost a marathon to get everything done this weekend but at least now I'm sure they will have their Halloween costumes in time and I can work on something else for a change. Like planning Christmas presents, for example. Because Christmas is just around the corner, you know?
