Hello, and welcome! I've been meaning to share this here for a while, because even though spring is the usual season for planting, there are lots of things you can plant in the fall. And even if you don't have a garden or a backyard, you can still make it work...
Herbs are usually the easiest option - they don't require a lot of space and are usually pretty low maintenance. For now we're growing mint and basil (in these photos both still recovering from our absence during the summer holidays and the lack of water during those weeks):
Having herbs at home is great - they are expensive when you buy them at the grocery store and it's great when you can cut then fresh right when you are cooking.
We tried strawberries this year too, but we had a too hot summer and it didn't work very well. We'll try again next year with new seeds.
Recently we have planted spinach and broccoli too, as both grow pretty well in small planters (tested last year). But our greatest success story? Cherry tomatoes.
We've grown them even in small planters, they deliver plenty of little tomatoes and some of the plants even survive from one year to the other. We've had a great crop this summer and, surprisingly, some of them have flowers now again, so we are expecting a second (though smaller) crop soon:
And for seedling, we usually reuse egg cartons - they are inexpensive and work pretty well:
