Christmas in July: Mini Tree Felt Ornaments

Hello, and welcome to my 2018 Christmas in July post.

I had been planning to make these Christmas tree ornaments for a long time - actually, since before last Christmas - and I thought this was the perfect time to finally get down to work.

They are very, very easy to make:

I started with green felt Christmas tree cut outs. I used my Sizzix to get these, but you can print any Christmas tree shape from the Internet and use it as a model, or buy pre-cut shapes instead (I've seen them at craft stores before, though not necessarily at this time of the year).

I added an eyelet to each ornament, but this is totally optional. Punching a hole or using a needle to pass a piece of yarn works just as well.

I embellished the mini trees with colorful "baubles" cut from glittery EVA foam, but there are lots of alternatives: pom poms, ribbons, more felt shapes, embroidered designs, beads, etc.

And when the glue used to secure the "baubles" in place was dry, I cut pieces of golden elastic to create the loops to hang the tree ornaments. Again, ribbon or yarn can do the trick.

For now I just made four, because I'm still deciding where to place these ornaments when it's time to decorate for Christmas, but they come together so quickly that there are probably more of of them in my future.

Oh, and this is also a great project to share with the kids, they love to decorate these mini Christmas trees!

And last but not least, because these ornaments were made using only materials I already had at home, they are a lovely contribution to my destashing efforts this year.

  2. These are so cute! I can see how many a bunch of them at once would be fun and easy - they'd make great gift tags, too.
