DIY felt food - a box of doughnuts

With tutorial and free pattern.

Ever since my daughter started to actively use her play kitchen I've been obsessed with making play food, mostly using felt. But I'd never bothered making patterns for it until now.

Recently, while toying around with a few potential blog posts, I decided to create a series of DIY play food tutorials.

The Box of Doughnuts is the first in a (hopefully) long list of ideas I want to share. Mostly because I love all the potential of these pieces of felt in terms of all the embellishments you can make.

When making this box of doughnuts, I gave myself one additional challenge: I had to use only felt scraps, which is a great way to declutter too.

To make the doughnuts you need to download the pattern and cut two doughnut pieces of light brown felt and one piece of frosting from any color you want.

You are making play food, so anything goes, really. The pattern holds two different choices of frosting shapes, just pick the one you prefer.

First, embellish the frosting in any way you want. Add beads or buttons, stitch around, whatever you prefer (though if you're making the doughnuts for younger children beads and buttons are not advisable).

Sew outer edge of the frosting on one of the doughnut pieces. Don't sew the inner edge.

Place both doughnut pieces right sides together and sew around the outer edge again, leaving a small opening, as shown below.

Turn inside out through the opening and sew the inner edge of the doughnut.

Fill with polyester filling and close the opening. One doughnut ready.

Now make as many as you want.

Have you seen a doughnut covered in stars? I hadn't either, but it was a special request from my daughter and I had to comply. It turned out to be my favorite!

If you're making them as a gift, you can just stack and tie them with a ribbon.

Or...you can make a doughnut box.

The box is made with a rectangle of felt of about 24 by 36 centimeters and will hold four doughnuts stacked in  twos.

Cut the felt as shown below (the sides are 6 centimeters high) and sew the corners to create a box.

The lid is made in exactly same way, just with the sides cut a bit shorter.

I added a doughnut shape on top of the lid and filled it with polyester too for a 3D effect.

Place the doughnuts in the box and tie it with a ribbon...

    1. Thank you Emma! I checked your blog and love some of the ideas there. Though technically I don't have preschoolers any more (my youngest started kindergarten this year) I'm guessing they'll love some of those projects too...

  7. Is there a limit to how many times you can PIN a post? If so, the Pinterest Police may be after me! LOL I have pinned and pinned this one. Stumbling too. WOW!!! I want to make these for my grandgirls to play house or donut shop with. When you cut the pattern out, are you using regular scissors? I lack the confidence that I can make those scallops so neatly. I think I need some crafting lessons to make mine look pretty as yours :)

Did you share this at my Wonderful Wednesday Blog Hop yet? If you didn't PLEASE come over and share. No one is ever "too late" ... we keep it open till Saturday night. Many a feature has been picked from later entries. :)

    1. Thank you so much for pinning and for featuring my post in your G+ party!
And yes to the regular scissors. If you look closely at the pictures of the cut out pieces, you'll see they look a bit wonky. But once you sew them, they sort of look ok. Besides, frosting doesn't come in neat scallops, right?

  11. I just had to visit, because when I first read your title I saw "DIY Fat food". I love donuts, but now you know how I relate to them. These would definitely help my diet.....or hurt it because they look so real I am now craving a donut. Sigh....

  12. Thanks for the fun pattern! I don't even know any little kids, but I can see these as Christmas ornaments, pincushions & even kitty toys...you know...catnip donuts! I would have loved these back in the 1950s when I was a kid & had my play grocery store in the basement.

    1. Yes, I guess you can use them in a variety of ways. The catnip doughnuts totally made me laugh! I've had cats in the past (not now, husband doesn't like cats) and I can totally picture them chasing one of these doughnuts!
