Faux weave crochet washcloth - free pattern

Hello, and welcome! Yesterday I shared the self care gift basket I made for Christmas and I promised I would share the pattern for the washcloth and the scrubbies set. So today I'm starting with the washcloth.

I call this the faux weave stitch. Truth be told, I have no idea what it's really called, but I think the end result does resemble a weave and I find it much simpler (and quicker to make) than the real crochet weave stitches.

This washcloth is a square of approximately 20 x 20 cm and I used a thick (but soft) cotton yarn and a 4 mm hook.

Here's the how to:

Row 1 - chain 25. Add one single crochet on the second chain from hook and one single crochet in all the following chains until the end (24 stitches total). You can easily change the size of the washcloth by adding more or less chains, as long as in total you always have an odd number of chains.

Row 2 - chain 2 and add a single crochet in the second stitch from the previous chain (so you're leaving a gap of one stitch). Chain one, leave a gap and add a single crochet on the second chain from hook. Repeat until the end.

Row 3 - similar to row 2, but you'll be adding single crochets over the "one" chains from the previous row and chaining one over the previous row's single crochets.

Rows 4 -27: same as row 3. Since different yarns yield different finished sizes, you may need to adjust the number of rows to make sure you have a square shaped washcloth.

Row 28: chain 1 and then add one single crochet over each of the stitches (and chains) from previous row (24 stitches in total). Cut the yarn and weave in ends.

Here's the finished washcloth together with the matching scrubbies (I'll share a pattern for those soon) and how it looks in the self care gift basket:
