Hello, and welcome! Today I'm sharing here a quick and fun tutorial to make flat zipper pouches with a key ring. These not only are very useful to keep in your purse to organize keys, makeup and other trinkets, but also make great handmade gifts for the upcoming holidays season.
Below are the required materials:
Basically you need:
- one rectangle of fabric (indicatively, the one I used was approximately 15 x 25 cm) and then similar sized pieces of lining and batting
- one zipper (at least 15 cm long) and one key ring.
- two smaller pieces of fabric slightly longer than width of the main fabric (indicatively, 18 x 5 cm)
- one even smaller piece to create the hoop for the key ring (5 x 6 cm is more than enough)
Sew along the top to secure the zipper in between the layers of fabric. Once you pull back the fabric to its right side, it should look like this:
Top stitch along the edge:
Repeat the process on the other side:
Flatten the pouch, centering the zipper, and start adding the fabric on each side to close the openings. Follow the steps below:
In the meantime, fold the smallest piece of fabric bias-tape like and sew or glue the edges (for these smaller pieces, I'm partial to using fabric glue). This will be the fabric loop to attach the keychain:
To sew the last part of the fabric at the edge of the pouch I also prefer hand stitching, though you can quickly use your machine to add a top stitch just as well.
Before sewing, place the key ring loop as shown below, then fold it upwards and finally sew everything together:
Repeat the process on the other side of the pouch (minus the key ring loop, since you only need one):
Add the key ring and your pouch is ready to be used:
In addition to being quick and easy to make, these pouches are also great to use up scraps of fabric. And, of course, you can adjust the measurements to make then larger or smaller, depending on what you want to use them for.
