Hello, and welcome. Today I'm bringing you a very fun project - using embroidery hoops to create organisers to hang on your walls.
I made mine to hold scissors, my rotary cutter and other sewing notions, since I've been reorganising my sewing area. But, in reality, these organisers can be used for everything, from makeup accessories to pens and pencils!
Here's the how to:
The first thing is to decide on the size of the hoop and the fabric you want to use. You need two pieces of fabric large enough to cover your hoop, with enough to spare (the excess will then be pulled towards the back of the hoop). One piece of fabric will be used to actually cover the hoop, and the other will be folded in half to create the pocket.
You can use the same fabric for both the background and the pocket, or change fabrics. I used this particular fabric because it was a leftover from the pillows I made for our guest room/my craft room when I updated it some time ago (you can read about it here).
1. Place your fabric in the hoop, including the pocket piece, and cut off any excess fabric, if needed:
It should look like this:
2. Decide if you want to keep just that large pocket or if you want to divide it into smaller pockets: If you just want the larger pocket, jump onto the next step. If you want the larger pocked divided, then continue on this step.
With the help of a ruler, mark where you want your pocket to be divided. I like to use temporary stitches in a contrasting color as a guideline for when I'm machine sewing, but disappearing ink works great too, for example (or you can just eyeball it, if you're brave enough).
Now sew the vertical lines that will divide your pocket. I sewed two lines, to in effect get three separate pockets:
3. Add ribbon, trim or lace to the edge of your pocket. This is obviously optional, but I kind of like the added embellishment.
4. Add stitches all around the excess fabric in the back of your hoop, near the edge, and pull on the stitches to gather the fabric close.
Here's how it will look (front and back):
5. Place a piece of felt over the back of the hoop. Again, this is optional, you can just leave it as it is the the photo above. But it looks a lot better if you cover that gathered fabric (even if in practical terms you will not see it once it's on the wall...).
Cut a circle of felt just slightly smaller than the diameter of the hoop and glue or sew it in place. Sometimes I just use glue, but this time I actually used a blanket stitch all around:
I love this idea!
ReplyDeleteGreat idea! Especially when you want the extra space on your desk from having a cup of tools.

That's great, I am not a tidy person but I do love organising ideas as I always think they will help. This will be a feature at Handmade Monday this coming week :-)
