Sometimes ideas come to us when you least expect. When were invited to attend the baptism of a sweet baby girl, as usual, I was left with the task of getting an appropriate gift. Now, we know there will be lots of guests attending, and I expect most people to lean towards more traditional baby gifts - and I wanted something different and original.
So I remembered the fabric covered wooden box I made a while ago, and decided I could make something similar for the parents to save all the memories of baptism day.
The box is probably not big enough to save the dress. but it can be used for the baptism candle, photos, shoes and other accessories.
I didn't make a tutorial because there really isn't a lot to it anyway. I bought a large enough wooden box at the craft store and covered with self adhesive fabric. Self adhesive fabric isn't cheap (at least not where I live) but I love working with it. For this kind of projects, self adhesive fabric is far easier to use than regular fabric and glue or even shelf adhesive paper. It leaves a very smooth finish and I've never had a project go wrong yet.
Once the box was fully covered (including the bottom and the inside), I added lace and ribbons for a prettier finish.
I also used my Sizzix to cut the letters to say "memories from my baptism" (or the Portuguese equivalent of it) out of some shimmery EVA foam I had in my stash.
And then, because I really wanted the box to be custom made, I designed a pretty label on Canva, with the baby girl's name.
Overall, it was a pretty easy project. It took me longer to figure out how I really wanted the box to look like and the best way to add the personal detail of the name than to actually assemble everything together.
I obviously make this with a baptism in mind, but the same idea can be used for any other kind of party with only minor adjustments. I'm sure I will be making more of these boxes in the future.
Happy Monday!
A lovely idea and a good way to keep things safe from the day.
