When my husband and I got married in 2004 and moved to our first house together, I bought a cute laundry basket to put in the master bathroom. Years later, after having two kids and moving to a bigger house, I got a bigger laundry basket for the laundry area kitchen, but I also kept the old one. It still lives in our bathroom.
The problem was, after so many years, the weaving of the basket lid started coming undone. It looked like this:
I debated several options, but after finding out how much an equivalent basket would cost (hand weaving and all that...) and taking into account that the basket itself was actually in perfect condition, I decided I needed to refurbish the lid.
First I removed the little wooden handle from the top of the lid:
And then I cut a circle of fabric large enough to cover the top of the lid and go around the sides:
Then I just needed to sew the fabric in place (I could have used glue, but since the basket lives in our bathroom, I prefer to have something I can easily wash without risking it coming undone). I added some trim from my stash to cover the stitches:
And used a bit of lace for the edging:
The lace was added as an afterthought but I think it looks nice. I attached the handle back using a piece of the same fabric:
Overall, I'm pretty happy with the results and with my "new" laundry basket!
Happy Monday,
Great save for a perfectly good laundry basket. They are pretty pricey these days!
ReplyDeleteThank you! Yes, these baskets are expensive nowadays. I bought this one a long time ago, but I honestly don't remember it costing that much.
DeleteA perfect way to save a perfectly good laundry basket. They're hard to find!
ReplyDeleteYes, especially because of the place I need it to fit in the bathroom, I have a height limitation because it needs to go under the counter but with room to open the lid...Thank you for stopping by!
DeleteWhat a great update to a still usable item. It looks nice and looks neater than the original version. :)
