Doll sleeping bag tutorial

In the never ending quest of having to create beds for all of my kids' stuffed animals and dolls, this time I decided to simplify things and just sew a sleeping bag...

I let my daughter choose the fabric she wanted for this one and it seems she's very happy with the result so, yes, it's a success.

Here's a small tutorial:

You will need fabric for both the exterior and the lining of the sleeping bag. I just used the same fabric, but you may decide on a contrasting lining. The amount of fabric you need to cut depends on the size of the doll you are making the sleeping bag for. For your reference, here's how I measured mine:

Note that each of the fabric pieces needs to be long enough to fold over the doll as shown (lining and exterior fabric).

You will also need a bit of polyester filling and a some sort of trim (optional).

To sew the sleeping bag, place both pieces right sides together and sew three of the sides, leaving one of the shorter sides open (or at least a small opening). Turn inside out and insert the polyester filling through the opening. Add as much filling as needed to leave the sleeping bag fully and comfortable, but don't fill it to the brim. Sew the opening shut.

If you decided to add trim, sew it on the top edge of the folded bag, as shown below:

Then pin the sides of the folded sleeping bag. You may want to insert the doll back in to make sure you have the correct height for the fold. Also, pin and sew on the wrong side of the bag. Sew down both sides:

Turn inside out and the sleeping bag is ready to be used:

Here's the lucky girl already enjoying her new sleeping bag:

And apparently the sleeping bag is also great to keep babies warm when they go out...

And here are some of the other doll beds I've made in the past, in case you want to check them out:
