How to dress-up a basket for spring

Sometimes simple materials and a bit of imagination go a long way to create wonderful projects. Such is the case of the basket makeover I'm going to show you today.

I've had this basket stored below our guest room bed for a long time. It was a hand-me down from a friend who had no use for it (together with another square basket which hopefully will also deserve its own post here in the next few days).

I love the color, but was just a plain round basket otherwise, and it came with an also plain (and a little worse for wear) matching lining.

This spring I decided it was time to finally put the basket to good use.

So I went through my stash, picked up a spring-ish piece of ribbon, and sewed it all around the edge of the lining, hiding the less than perfect areas:

Then I added a thin elastic all around (the original lining already came with a casing, otherwise I would have created one before sewing the ribbon), to get the lining to remain in place more easily (besides, it adds a ruffle effect which I think also looks cute),

And finally, because I thought there was still some detail missing, I used the rest of the ribbon to add a bow on each side, both secured with a flower button.

Overall, this was a pretty quick project, not to mention inexpensive, since everything came out of my stash.

The dressed-up basket perfectly matches our guest room decor. Since the guest room also doubles as my craft room, I'm still not sure if I'm going to use the basket to store works in progress or if I'll be turning it into an Easter gift basket.

In any case, I'm loving the new look.

  1. Super cute! Don't you just love it when you can update something you already have and make it new again? That's one of my favorite things to do and I don't do it often enough!

    1. That's probably what I'll end up using it for, because after I finished it I thought it would look great as an Easter basket.
