Easy DIY Christmas Stocking (with pattern)

This year I made Christmas stockings. To be honest, we've never used stockings at our house. We don't have a fireplace to hang them on, so we usually just gather the presents under the Christmas tree and consider it done.

But this year the Christmas project at my kids' school was to make one Christmas stocking from scratch using any material. Since my imagination can be stretched only so far and I do have a lot of fabric in my crafts closet, sewing was the natural option. And since I had to sew two stockings instead of just one, I also decided to make a pattern, which I'm sharing with you today.

As you will see, they are very quick to make, so you can easily assemble a whole batch of stockings in one afternoon.

Materials needed:
  • the pattern - download here, cut and join where indicated.
  • felt in two different colors - I used red for the exterior and white for the lining. You can also use other fabrics but if they fray, cut the lining a bit longer on top to have room to create a hem.
  • embellishments - I used pompom trim, glue-on rhinestones, ribbon and buttons for my stockings, but you can use whatever your prefer.
  • a small piece of ribbon for hanging

Step 1: cut the felt according to the pattern. When you are cutting the lining, remember to add the extra height as indicated in the pattern.

Step 2: place each of the exterior pieces right sides together (not that it really matters with felt), pin and sew all around leaving just the top open. Do the same with the lining.

Step 3: place lining inside the exterior of the stocking and fold the excess lining over. Sew in place. Or, if you're pressed for time like me, glue it in place. If you're using felt, glue is the easiest option. If your lining frays, you may need to sew (or glue) a hem.

Step 4: add embellishments. For stocking number one I added pompom trim in two places (as per my son's request) and glued the rhinestones (on both sides of the stocking, so you can hang it in any way you want).

For stocking number two (my daughter's) I added ribbon bows topped with a white button and then, because she's a glitter kind of girl, I glued a circle of glitter paper over the button.

Step 5: Sew a piece of ribbon or cord to be able to hang the stocking.

And you're done! Now you just have to hang the stockings in place and wait for Christmas day!
