(Almost) Wordless Wednesday - visiting a tide mill

On the last day of our summer vacation we took the kids to visit a tide mill that has been recently reconstructed and turned into a museum.

I didn't know, but apparently tide mills were pretty common on the south bank of the Tagus river. If you don't know how a tide mill works you can check this link, but basically they were used to grind cereal just like windmills, but used the force of water (through the rising and falling of tides) instead.

This particular tide mill was built in the 15th century and is still in working condition today, though now only for cultural purposes. The official webpage of the Corroios Tide Mill is here, but unfortunately only available in Portuguese as far as I can see.

Here's how it looks on the inside:

I do love visiting these places and getting an insight on how people lived in the past. Overall, a perfect ending for our summer vacation.
