Hello, and welcome! Today I'm sharing here a quick tutorial on how to make a quilted reversible placemat.
I actually made these over the summer to be used on the patio table we keep on our balcony when the weather is pleasant enough to eat outdoors. But since they are very easy to sew and make great gifts, I finally managed to find a bit of time to post this tutorial, just in time for the holidays season.
To make one placemat you need:
- two rectangles of fabric in the size you want your finished placemats to have
- one rectangle of batting in the same size as the fabric (iron-on works just fine)
- enough fabric or bias tape to sew around the edges of the placemat
- matching sewing thread
- a water soluble marking pen (not absolutely necessary, but recommended)
Here are the pieces of fabric I started with (I ended up sewing three different placemats):
And below is the water soluble pen I prefer:
See it on Amazon |
Step one:
Iron the batting in place (if you're using the iron-on variety) or place the batting in between the two rectangles of fabric. Pin the pieces of fabric (wrong sides together), with the batting in between.
Step 2:
With the water soluble pen, mark the lines you will be quilting over. I decided on diagonal stripes and used a ruler to draw the lines and space them out.
Step 3:
Sew over the lines you've just marked on the fabric, effectively joining all the layers of fabric and batting.
Step 4:
Sew the fabric or bias tape all around the edges. I used bits of the same fabrics for this.
You can fold the fabric to get mitered corners, but that's totally optional.
Now sew as many as you want! Here are mine, "front" and "back":
And remember, these turn our very pretty and are great to use either in the family dinners you will host during the holidays season, or to make as gifts for friends and family!
Very nice! Thanks.
