DIY Sewing Machine Cover

Hello and welcome! Today I'm sharing here my latest sewing project: a cover for my sewing machine.

DIY Sewing Machine Cover

The original cover (that came with the machine) was actually made of thin plastic and completely worn out after all these years of use. But as my sewing machine is almost always on top of the table I use for sewing (unless we have guests staying over and the sewing room is returned to its original guest room purpose), I needed something to keep the dust at bay.

So, of course I decided to sew a new cover myself.

While I had a look at a couple of patterns online, I ended up going with my own pattern (and winging it a bit too, as usual).

I started by creating a sort of pattern from paper. I decided on two panels (front and back) and one longer strip for the sides and top.

I cut the fabric on fold (to avoid having to cut separate lining pieces) and used iron-on batting.

Then I just had to sew the front and back pieces to the sides/top piece:

Then, because my sewing machine has a foldable handle, I measured and cut a rectangle at the top of the cover:

To make things easier, I added bias tape all around the opening. And then, because I wanted the possibility of using the handle with the cover on but I also didn't want dust to gather at all over the sewing machine through that opening, I cut an additional rectangle of fabric, slightly larger than the opening (again, lined and with batting in between, and edged with bias tape):

To keep that "flap" in place, I added plastic snaps, one at each corner:

I also added bias tape all over the bottom of the cover (most of the bias tape was hand sewn too, since I've never had much success machine sewing bias tape in the past):

And that was it. With this trick, the sewing machine can be transported with the "flap" open, or removed completely...

...and then be kept completely covered while not in use:

Overall, this was not a particularly difficult project, and I'm pretty happy with the results.

Have fun, and happy Tuesday!
