Finishing a vintage embroidery project

If you follow me on Instagram you've already seen the before and after of this project. It all started with a half finished embroidery of a pair of cute cats I found while going through my mother's things. 

The fabric was hemmed, the crochet border was complete, but parts of the cats were missing. And since I can't resist a good embroidery challenge - or cute cats - I brought it home and decided to give it a go and try to finish it.

The main challenge was finding the right embroidery floss - because, of course, there was no extra floss attached to the fabric (or anywhere else I could find) other than a few meager strands that were virtually unusable. 

So I resorted to an old box of (more vintage) embroidery floss and managed to find a similar blue and brown. 

The floss I had to use is slightly thicker than the original (and not of the kind where you can separate strands either) but I made it work. 

Overall, I was pretty lucky that I could somehow find matching floss, and that whatever disappearing ink my mother used was great quality - lasted enough for me to finish the project and any leftovers washed away perfectly. 

I have no idea what my mother was actually making this for, but it's the perfect size for a dish towel, so I've washed and ironed it and I'm putting it to use in the kitchen.
