Crochet holidays napkin rings - free pattern

These shorter fall days (especially with the rain we've had around) have made me turn more to crochet than to sewing projects. So today I'm sharing here the pattern for the napkin rings I came up with during last weekend.

Because the only thing I dislike about crochet is the need to weave in ends, I decided to make the green part (the ring itself) in just one piece, not cutting the yarn in between - find out how below.

All you need for these napkin rings is some light green and red yarn (they would probably look great in gold and red too but I don't have any gold yarn at home right now...) and a crochet hook. I used 100% cotton yarn and a 2.5 mm hook. My napkin rings have an approximate diameter of 5 cm.

Instructions:

Row 1: Chain 31. Add one single crochet in each of the chains, starting on the next chain from hook (30 stitches total).

Rows 2 and 3: Chain one (doesn't count as a stitch) and add one single crochet over each of the stitches from row 1 (30 stitches total).

Row 4: Chain one (doesn't count as a stitch) and add one single crochet over the last stitch from the previous row (the first stitch in this row). *Chain two, skip two stitches, single crochet in the next stitch*. Repeat the pattern between * until the end of the row. This will create the slits to run the red "ribbon" through (10 chain spaces).

Row 5: Chain one (doesn't count as a stitch). Add one singe crochet in each stitches from the previous row and two single crochets over each chain space from the previous row (30 stitches total).

Rows 6 and 7: Same as rows two and three.

Row 8: Same as row 5.

Row 9: Over each chain space from previous row add the following: two single crochets, chain two, two single crochets. Skip the single crochets from previous row.

Now, to avoid breaking the yarn, and since the goal is to turn the crochet rectangle into a ring anyway, fold it right sides together and single crochet down, joining the two edges:

Turn inside our again. Now you will be crocheting on the other side of the ring:

Weave in ends and the ring itself is finished.

For the red "ribbon" just chain 70 (add more or less chains if you would like your bow larger or smaller), weave in the ends and then run it through the openings in the center of the rings, one under, one over and tie a bow.

Now make as many of these napkin rings as you need, either to decorate your holidays table or to give as gifts.
