4 Steps to Camp on the Beach with Kids & Printable Activities

Imagine rolling over to see sunny skies, fluffy clouds, and an ocean breeze from the side of your bed. Beach camping is a one-of-a-kind overnight experience and one that can teach your kids a thing or two about the seaside.

4 Steps to Camp on the Beach with Kids & Printable Activities

Take your kids out for a successful beach camping vacation following these four tips for success.

1, Pick a Location

While the ocean is always the ocean, not all the beaches are the same. In Portugal you can choose the colder ones in the north, the windier ones in the center or the warmer ones in the south of the country. In the US you’ve got two completely different coasts to pitch a tent at: the West Coast with its sprawling oceans (try camping in Bodega Bay, California—a dog-friendly environment that everyone knows and loves), or the East Coast - try the undiscovered camping areas on the Florida Panhandle. You’ll love the warm waters along the Gulf of Mexico.

Anyway, take into account the needs and preferences of your family and choose your favourite!

2. Create a Packing List

Packing for a camping vacation on the beach requires some extra foresight. Make sure you include the following beach-specific items in your packing list before you head out to camp at the seaside:
  • Life jackets
  • Rain fly or tarp
  • Sunscreen
  • Beach umbrella
  • Beach toys for the kids (trust me, you'll need them)

3. Plan Activities

We get it: for mom and dad, watching the waves, content in beach chairs is probably enough to schedule a beach camping trip. Unfortunately, our little ones typically need more excitement than soaking up the sun all day. Before you go, make a sleeping bag for your child’s favorite doll or stuffed animal, for example. Not only are they accompanied by a toy, but they also will feel like they’re joining in the camping family fun.

For more family fun, print these five beach camping activities for hours of entertainment.

From competitive I-spy to bingo and a matching game, your entire crew will enjoy these easy-to-play games.

 4. Track the Tides

The last thing you want is to be washed up by a monster wave in the dead of sleep. If your campsite is directly on the oceanfront, you’ll want to monitor this consistently. Measure how far high tide will go and pitch your tent accordingly.

That’s it! You’re ready for your sandy vacation. Enjoy pitching your tent, lighting up the fire, and roasting marshmallows while you listen to the surreal sound of waves crashing.

Happy Wednesday,
