The challenge we are currently facing has been very difficult from some individuals and families. Now more than ever, many of us recognize the importance of helping kids develop coping strategies to be able to adequately face this current challenge and to feel prepared to handle future challenges. A growth mindset can help kids feel more confident, positive, and resilient.

A growth mindset mentality is one where individuals understand that their abilities can be further developed.

The term was coined by Carol Dweck, a psychologist and professor at Stanford University. Her goal was to help close the achievement gaps by helping students understand their abilities and how learning can enhance them. A growth mindset differs from a fixed mindset where individuals believe their intelligence and talent cannot be improved. One of the benefits of a growth mindset is it encourages individuals to continue learning and working hard in order to influence outcomes.

In addition to discussing the benefits of helping kids develop a growth mindset in more detail, this piece alsos offers advice for helping kids develop a growth mindset. You can also find three educational printables to download at the end!

How Do Kids Benefit From Developing a Growth Mindset?

A growth mindset can help kids enjoy learning and feel inspired to continue on their educational path. A growth mindset can help also help kids:

  • Develop independence
  • Understand what they want to accomplish and how to do so
  • Acknowledge their strengths and weaknesses
  • Become more resilient
  • Focus on the process opposed to just the outcome
  • Build self-esteem
  • Cope better with transitions
  • Reduce stress, anxiety, and negative self-talk
  • Understand their emotions
  • View challenges as opportunities

Ways to Help Kids Develop a Growth Mindset

There are a number of ways to encourage kids to develop a growth mindset. Remember that developing a growth mindset is an ongoing process and some kids may have a more difficult time being open to the mindset than others. Try to remain positive and encourage an open dialogue. Ask your kids how they are feeling about the process and explain why you are working on this together. Below are some ways you can encourage a growth mindset in kids:

  • Set a strong, consistent example
  • Try not to praise intelligence, as this can encourage a fixed mindset
  • Set reasonable expectations
  • Let them face challenges
  • Help them identify and work through their emotions
  • Applaud effort and progress
  • Allow them to struggle and problem solve on their own
  • Encourage creative thinking
  • Help them see that mistakes are part of the process

Encourage a Growth Mindset with Printables

Using printables can help make this experience interesting and enjoyable. These printables can help your kids feel excited about developing a growth mindset. The following printables include an emotional grid exercise, a goal setting worksheet, and a growth mindset conversation cube. All three can be downloaded at the end of the post.

1. Emotion Grid Exercise

An emotional grid exercise can help kids identify their emotions and understand what brings about these feelings. Help them understand that it is ok to feel a variety of emotions and why different situations impact the way they feel. This exercise can enable them to express and moderate their feelings in a healthy, productive way.

2. Goal Setting Worksheet

A goal setting worksheet can help kids understand exactly what they want to achieve and what steps they will need to take in order to accomplish this goal. Teaching kids at an early age that achieving goals is possible through hard work will encourage them to continue striving for more in the future.

3. Growth Mindset Conversation Cube

A conversation cube can open up a dialogue. Each side has a question prompt that can spark a conversation. This exercise can help kids think critically and develop self-awareness. Teaching kids how self-reflect and talk about their feelings can help them feel more confident and open.
