I've officially started making Christmas gifts! And the first one is for a baby cousin, who will be about 4 months old around Christmas, so bibs were a natural choice.
I've made lots of bibs in the past, using my baby bib pattern but those bibs were mostly for girls, all round and dainty (check here for the version of the bib with a pocket). This time, as I was making bibs for a boy soon starting his first solid foods, I wanted the bibs to be larger. So what did I do? I drafted a new pattern, of course!
To make a bib like this you'll need:
- the pattern - download here. With this pattern you'll get a bib about 23 cm wide by 33 cm high (after seam allowances, which are included in the pattern)
- cute fabric
- a soft (bot not too thin) towel for the back. You can really use any other fabric, but I prefer to buy a small towel to cut, because they absorb a lot more and are pretty inexpensive too.
- snaps (or velcro)

Instructions:
First, print the pattern and join part A and part B. Place the pattern over the fabric (pay attention where it says to cut on fold) and cut one piece of fabric and one piece of towel.
Place the two pieces right sides together, pin in place and sew all around except for a small opening.
Turn inside out and top stitch all around, making sure the opening is sewn shut (top stitching is optional but will give the bib a more polished, professional look.
Finally add the snaps (or sew to pieces of velcro), and you're done!
I intended to make just the dinosaurs bib, but then came across the sailboats print in my stash and though it was just perfect for another bib. And a 4 month old can't have too many bibs right?

ReplyDeleteHi Dianne, these bibs were large, so fo 6 -12 months I would add 1-2 cm all around the outer edges, and then decrease that same amount around the inner edge of the neck. You may want to test the neck opening before sewing, though, to make sure it's not too small or too large.

Hi, I’m in Europe so I tend to size my prints to A4 sized paper, which is the standard here. Can you print it that way? If not I’ll try to print it myself and check measurements to give you some guidance.
