Spring-perfect rainbow hair clips

(and a how-to-make-the-perfect-bow tutorial)

Hello, and welcome. Today I'm going to show you the rainbow hair clips I made for my daughter, and also how you can easily create perfectly shaped bows.

My daughter loves anything and everything with rainbows. Most of her drawings (and she draws a lot) include at least one rainbow. So when I found a rainbow ribbon at the craft store, I just knew I had buy it.

DIY bunny ears headband

Hello and welcome. today I'm sharing a very quick - and cute - project for Easter. I've been seeing bunny ears all around lately, so I decided to make my own. Because, of course, I'm terrible at following other people's patterns and instructions and much better creating things from scratch.

I didn't manage to take a lot of pictures of the process because my kids were too impatient to get their respective bunny ears. And after I was finished with each set I just had time for a quick snapshot before they took them away. My daughter even used the bunny ears when we went to the grocery store last Sunday after church - actually, she asked if she could wear them to church before...

My original plan was to make both ears in gray felt and then have the inner parts of the ears in pink and blue, for a girl/boy version. My kids raided my felt scraps, though, and decided on totally different colors. Since I was making the bunny ears for them anyway, I just went with the flow.

Here's the tutorial if you want to make them too:

Santa Hat Headband - tutorial & pattern

Hello and welcome! Today I'm sharing with you a Santa hat headband I made for my daughter's ballet class Christmas show. I have no idea what the girls will be dancing exactly, but parents had to produce the Santa hat headbands by this week at the latest. I searched several stores last week for mini Santa hats and found none, so I had to go the usual route - I made my own.

Love Spring DIY Hairclips

Hello, and welcome to spring 2017!

Today I back here to share another of my spring projects: the hairclips I made for my daughter to wear on the first day of spring.

Love Spring DIY Hairclips

I started with two simple hairclips, two felt flowers and two smaller felt hearts:

The felt flowers and hearts were cut using my Sizzix Big Shot, but it you don't have one they can be easily replicated if you print similar shapes off the internet and use them as a pattern.

These colors were not my first choice. To be honest, I was vying for green, soft pink or yellow, but my daughter declared she wanted hot pink and purple (her favorite colors) and since she's the one wearing the hairclips, it was only fair to comply.

First I glued the flowers to the hairclips and then the hearts on top of the flowers.

Overall, these were a 10 minute project, and since a girl apparently can't have too many hairclips, they still make one cute spring accessory.

Quick & easy DIY ponytail holders

This year my daughter's first grade teacher sent a note home saying the she prefers to have the girls with longer hair using ponytails during class time. We do have a few store bought ponytails at home, but they've seen several years of use already, so we decided to make some new ones. It was our mother-daughter craft last weekend.

Ponytails are very easy to make, but if you're taking the time, you might as well make them as cute as possible. So we decided to use some princess buttons I bought at a craft store a while ago.

Ribbon covered doll hair clips

This is a project than has been finished for while but that I never got round to share before. Years ago, long before my daughter was even born, I found a couple of cute wood and yarn dolls at the craft store. And because I can't resist cute craft supplies when I see them, I brought them home. I never used them, though, and they ended up stored at the bottom of a box on one of the shelves of my craft closet.

In one of my recent decluttering missions I found them again and decided it was more than time to put them to use. And so the doll hair clips were born.

I started by covering two hair clips with a large piece of ribbon. I didn't take a lot of pictures of the process, but you can see below how it tuned out. Basically the ribbon is folded over and secured with fabric glue:

Then I just glued the dolls over the hair clips.

(because I'm naturally distrustful of glue, I added a few stitches securing the dolls' dresses to the ribbon, but you really don't need to).

The dolls don't match exactly, since when I bought them I did not mean for them to be a pair, but my daughter loves them anyway.

A few less items cluttering my closet + cute hair accessories? It's win-win all the way!

Enjoy,

Double ribbon hair clips

This is the ideal project to use ribbon, felt or fabric scraps. And since my daughter is prone to loosing hair clips on a daily basis, once in a while I need to make a new batch...

For the double ribbon hair clips, start with two long pieces of matching ribbon, one wider than the other and one shorter piece (double the numbers if you're making a pair of hair clips):

Add a drop of glue on the edges of the wider pieces of ribbon...

...then place the other ribbon on top (the glue is optional and just helps keeps both pieces of ribbon in place when you fold them):

Fold both edges towards the back and add a small stitch at the center (or another drop of glue), to create a bow-like shape:

Then just add the center piece of ribbon, pulling it slightly to create the creases. Sew or glue it on the back.

The same technique can be used with felt & ribbon instead of two pieces of ribbon:

Once the bows are secure, glue them onto plain hair clips, let the glue dry and they are ready to wear!

After making the pairs above I decided to make one using a large blue ribbon and pieces of folded fabric (again, scraps). It turned out OK, though in the pictures it looks more like a bow tie than a hair clip:

And here is the whole set (though this was taken at night and it's not as clear as the other pictures):

Puffy bow hair clips tutorial

Did you miss me? I have been totally out of the loop since we have been dealing with a nasty stomach virus that landed me, my daughter and my husband in the ER between the end of last week and most of this week as well. The only one that so far has miraculously escaped has been my son and hope I'm just not jinxing it by writing this, since we have a wedding to attend on Sunday and really need to be back in shape by them.

Anyway, a week ago I stayed at home to take care of my daughter (she was the first one to come down with the virus) and because I was not sick then (or at least not showing any symptoms) I felt the need to cheer her up (and do something with my hands other than changing puked bed sheets), so I came up with the puffy bow hair clips.

After making the first bow I decided to create a small tutorial and took all the pictures. Then I got sick as well and never finished writing the post. Now, finally, here it is.

Start with some cute fabric and some simple hair clips.

To make the bow, cut a square of fabric as shown below. I did not measure the fabric but you can see how it compares to the clip at its side to have an idea.

Then fold the square in half to get a rectangle...

...and, wrong sides together, sew around the long side and one of the shorter sides of the rectangle, leaving open the other shorter side.

Turn it inside out, insert polyester filling through the opening...

... and then sew the opening shut. You now have something that resembles a small pillow:

Now cut a smaller rectangle of fabric and fold both edges over (it will resemble bias tape).

Pin and sew the tip of the fabric onto the back of your "pillow" and pull it around the body of the bow:

Trim excess fabric and sew the other end at back as well, to maintain the bow shape. You have made one puffy bow!

Sew or glue it to the hair clip and your puffy bow hair clips are ready to be used (as long as glue is dry, LOL).

It is an easy and simple way to make cute hair clips to match all your girl's outfits.
